Despite being founded in 1914, the first Maserati-badged car, the Tipo 26, did not appear until 1926 when it won its class in the Targa Florio, driven by Alfieri Maserati. This marked the start of the Maserati racing legend.During the 1920’s and 30’s Maserati establishing a strong reputation for racing in national and international events, attracting the support of some of the racing greats such as Tazio Nuvolari. In 1954 Maserati introduced the iconic 250F to compete in the Formula 1 Championship, which debuted at the Argentine Grand Prix winning the race in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio. In 1957 Fangio returned to Maserati and won the World Title for the fifth time – the first time for Maserati – with the 250F.
In 1947 Maserati turned its attention to road-going cars with the A6 1500. This car, styled by Pininfarina, was a grand tourer, or gran turismo, built to combine high-performance, ease of driving and comfort. This philosophy of “performance luxury” has been applied to every road-going Maserati ever since.
Since 1993 Maserati has been under the ownership of Fiat Group and has strong connections to its sister brand Ferrari.
In 1998 Maserati launched the 3200 GT which heralded the modern era for Maserati. In 2003, the fifth-generation Quattroporte debuted at the Frankfurt motorshow. This car has been the foundation of Maserati’s recent success and is the company’s best ever selling model.
Today the Maserati range consists of the Quattroporte saloon, the GranTurismo coupe and the new GranCabrio convertible.
